Science and Technology Progress Prize Goes to USTC Prof. Yang Chengzong

The 2001 Science and Technology Progress Prize was issued recently in Beijing by the He-Liang-He-Li Foundation. Prof. Yang Chengzong, well-known chemist, founder of radiation chemistry in New China and former USTC vice-president, was one of the 56 renowned scientists honoured. The Prize is for those who have made remarkable inventions, important discoveries and outstanding achievements in natural sciences. $200,000 (HK) as prize money was given to each of the awardees.
Prof. Yang Chengzong has long been working on the separation, analytical methods and applications of natural radioactive elements. As one of the important members participating in the making of China' "Two Bombs and One Satellite", Prof. Yang was highly recognized for his pioneering research work in the making of atomic bombs and was deservedly named the founder of nuclear chemistry in New China. His work on "The Scattering Phenomenon of ? Rays" is regarded as basic literature on the research and application of the back scattering of ? rays and has been widely quoted. As one of the founders of USTC, he was once appointed dean of the USTC Chemistry Department, USTC vice-president and chairman of the Association of Radioactive Chemistry of China.
