Chen Zhu foresees the Biotechnology and Life Science at USTC Forum

On 7th, September, the vice president of CAS and foreign Academician of US National Academic of Sciences, Academician Chen Zhu visits USTC Forum and make an academic report under the invitation titled Foresee the Biotechnology and Life Science at the Student Centre of USTC west campus. The lecture is chaired by USTC standing Party Committeeman and vice president Xu Wu. Secretary Wang Keqiang, Academician Shi Yunyu and executive head of USTC Life Science School are all at present. The illuminating lecture given by Academician Chen Zhu obtains the warm welcome form staff and students.

Academician Chen Zhu describes the early development, current situations and future trends of the life science and biotechnology from five aspects, which are life science and biology economy, achievements during the innovation project under CAS, current situations and problems explanation and reviews on strategy and cases analysis. The report depicts a clear history of biology development and its exciting prospective. Academician Chen Zhu states that biotechnology and life science research was on individual life phenomenon previously, while now attach importance to systematization and integration of biology. He also stresses that the most key feature of life complicated system doesn't lie in the complex individual indigent, but in the relations among these elements and the dynamics raised by these relations. As far as research concerned, the comprehension of systematic functions is above the analysis of each indigent. Academician Chen Zhu demonstrates the data got from Human being genome plan to express life science is pioneer in 21st century, for it founds the bases to solve the problems, such as human health and aliments, growth and evolvement, as well as IQ and recognition.
 

He stresses that life science and biotechnology ultimately aim to benefiting people and protecting environment. The demands to extending life span and improving life quality call for the breakthroughs in many aspects, including medicals, agriculture, biological energy and environment protection. The development of life science brings the significant breaks of biologic technology, breeding and urging the revolution of biology industry, which will become a second pillar industry after the information industry. China’s biology industry amounts to six thousand million in 2003. Through 10 to 15 years, we expect it up to following goals: five thousand billion in 2010, two trillion in 2020 and standing 5 percentage of GDP and the scale of biology industry ranking world top 5.
Academician Chen Zhu points out that nowadays, biology economy comes into soaring- development session all over the global. China’s participating in international cooperation and traditional industries facing advancement and reformation provide many opportunities for biology economy developments of China. Meanwhile, our nation possesses sound bases and advantages, such as abundant biological resources and developing such an economy meeting the demands to construct a well-off society. However, we still face many challenges, including China general innovation capabilities having a large gap to that of developed countries, less industrialism awareness, weak operation system and backward company research abilities.
 
Academician Chen Zhu states that papers on life science and biotechnology from CAS published in Science and Nature stands 50 percentage of the whole quantity of CAS issued papers.
CAS has obtained a series of initiative achievements in genome, protein science, IQ and recognition, medicines and gene-transformed products and environment protection. Life science and biotechnology has been the main wave of knowledge innovation, the key point of future industries and the tap of initiative technology exploitation.
 
He considers that CAS owns the comprehensive advantages brought out by multi-discipline crossing, research-tightly-combining-exploitation tradition, and unity of technology-intensive and labor-intensive and National Botanical Garden, so it has wonderful conditions for developing life science and biotechnology.
 
Academician Chen Zhu also critics that life science layout has weak segments, such as less developed psychology, industrial biotechnology, lacking disciplines crossing, small-scale and sparsely-scattered research group, lacking firm sustaining system. These problems result in blocking surging up of novel original ideas, weakening the advantages of CAS jointly solving the key problems, hindering our society economy from developing, and other problems.
 
In the lecture, Academician Chen Zhu systematically introduce the strategic layout of CAS life science and then through illustrating classical cases, such as Ⅱ-typed diabetes and molecule organization of key crops to clarify how to combine the front-line science and significant technology. He expresses that China’s scientists should be dare to make novel things out of some most fundamental science, be professional at transforming demand problems to science and technology problems and take advantage of science and applying technology to deeply research on basis problems, hence trigger the curiosity and initiative inside of the scientists.
 
"In fact, surveying the science history, many applications evoking the big surprises are quite often without researchers' utilitarian aims. Always you do research with a utilitarian heart, you will get nothing. In turn, the more curiosity you own, the much more breaks you will get." Academician Chen Zhu says, "We have to study the science history, for we need do research abide by the rules within the science. We need to think about how to heighten the original creativities in our country, China." He hopes USTC can do more contribution to breeding talents with creative hearts.
 
Xu Wu stresses his point that USTC has made systematical biology and protein science the disciplines with special features. He hopes the faculties and students work hard still and absorb the essences of the academic report given by Academician Chen Zhu. How to make utmost to do dedications to China's life science and biotechnology is the issue over which every researchers in USTC should ponder.
