At the invitation of the CAS and Prof. Zhu Qingshi, president of USTC. Prof. Scott ---- former vice-president of Cornell University and now president assistant in charge of the cooperation and exchange affairs of the East Asia ---- paid a two-day visit to USTC. During the interview with Prof. Scott on the afternoon of Oct. 30th, president Zhu Qingshi reviewed USTC's delegation visit to Cornell University and expressed his gratitude for the warm reception the delegation had received in Cornell University. The two sides exchanged views on the implementation of inter-school cooperation based on the bilateral agreement signed last year. President Zhu Qingshi expressed the hope that Prof. Scott extend USTC's cordial invitation to Cornell's president for a visit at a convenient time in 2002. USTC vice-president Hou Jianguo and Prof. Yang Jie, director of USTC Foreign Affairs Office, were present at the interview. On the evening of 30th, president Zhu Qingshi hosted a banquet in honor of Prof. Scott. During his stay in USTC, Prof. Scott, accompanied by vice-president Hou Jianguo, visited Centre for the Physical Sciences and Chemical Sciences, the Plasma and Quantum Computations laboratories, the Special Class for Gifted Young and the Nano-Chemistry / Nano-Materials lab. Prof. Scott also dropped in at the USTC Ceramic Centre, where he happily drew some improvisational pictures. During the following day, Prof. Scott visited the Schools of Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences, the National Synchrotron Radiation Lab, USTC IFly Corporation, and USTC Radiation Chemistry Corporation. On Nov. 1st, Prof. Yang Jie talked with Prof. Scott in detail about inter-school cooperation and exchanges between USTC and Cornell University. Prof. Scott said that he felt there were many research fields of common interest between the two schools, especially in the fields of Life sciences and Nano Sciences. He suggested that USTC professors find their Cornell counterparts who share the same research interests and establish cooperative relations with them. The two sides also talked about the possibility of cooperation in the field of synchrotron radiation, the programme to co-educate doctoral students and short-term student exchange programmes. Prof. Scott said that he would try to persuade president of Cornell University to provide financial support for the cooperation programmes and pay a visit to USTC in January, 2002.
