The CAS Key Laboratory of Structural Biology (LSB), was officially approved and opened in 1997. The LSB has successfully passed the national evaluation in the year of 2001 and now many outstanding scientists, both domestic and overseas, are in the research team and concentrating their interests in the following directions: the structure-function relationships of biological macromolecules related to signal transduction, biological protection & endurance under extreme conditions, and damages by natural biotoxins; structural bases and mechanisms of interaction & recognition between DNA and related regulatory proteins, enzymes & ligends; structural biology and proteomics studies on cell mitosis; structural genomics of new genes expressed in human hematpoietic stem/progenitor cells and hematonosis-related proteins; methodology of protein crystallography, biological NMR, computational biology and bio-informatics, etc. The LSB has been well equipped with modern facilities for investigating the structures and functions of biological macromolecules, including the systems for collecting data of X-ray crystal diffraction, 2D NMR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrum, laser cofocus microscopes, DNA sequencers, polypeptide synthesis instruments, liquid chromatograph for protein purification, centrifugal machines with super speed, facilities for cell culture and screen, and other instruments for molecular biology and cell biology, etc. There are now eight full-time professors in the LSB, including one CAS academician and three young talents supported financially by "The National Outstanding Young Talent Projects" and "The National Natural Science Foundation of China". Among the LSB members, four young full-time professors came back from overseas and set up their groups through "The CAS One-Hundred Scholars Project". The LSB scientists are now playing an essential role in the research of structural biology in China. The LSB warmly welcomes more scholars, both domestic and overseas, to join the group in the research of structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, computational biology and bio-informatics. | |
