President Zhu Qingshi Elected into the Fellowship of the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS)

President Zhu Qingshi Elected into the Fellowship of the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS)


Mohamed H.A. Hassan, Executive Director of TWAS, wrote to inform President Zhu recently that upon the recommendation of the Council of TWAS, the Members of the Academy had decided to elect him into the Fellowship of the Academy. The election of President Zhu into the fellowship of the TWAS is regarded as "a clear recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and its development in the Third World". President Zhu has also been invited to attend The 8th General Conference of the TWAS & The 7th General Assembly of the TWNSO which will be held in New Delhi, India, during the period of 19-23 October 2002.

The introduction of President Zhu Qingshi on TWAS website is as follows, "Zhu Qingshi is a physical chemist perhaps best known for his experimental discovery and theoretical explanation of the long-lived local mode vibrations in polyatomic molecules. He is responsible for the development of a new high-sensitivity and high-resolution technique by means of Intra-Cavity Laser Absorption Spectrometry (ICLAS) combined with Fourier-transform spectrometry, which has gained him world reputation. Zhu is also a leading figure in green chemistry in China, with his research focusing on environmentally sustainable development."

The Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) is an autonomous international organization, which was founded in Trieste, Italy in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. It was officially launched by the then-secretary general of the United Nations in 1985. TWAS membership consists of Fellows and Associate Fellows, who are drawn from the most distinguished scientists. At present, TWAS has 588 members (481 Fellows from 61 countries in the South and 107 Associate Fellows from 14 countries in the North). TWAS represents the best of science in the developing world, and its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South.

There are altogether 72 Fellows of the TWAS in China. Famous Chinese scientists such as Lu Jiaxi, Wu Jieping, Zhou Guangzhao were awarded the title. Lu Jiaxi, Zhou Guangzhao and Lu Yongxiang were elected vice-president of the TWAS one after another.
