USTC Obtains Significant Achievement in the Single Molecule Bond Selective Chemistry Domain
2005-09-08

Recently, Academician Hou Jianguo, Prof. Yang Jinlong, Academician Zhu Qingshi and other researchers from Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale take advantage of ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy, delicately carrying out single molecule operation on cobalt pigment element (CoPc) absorbed on the metallic surface, hence realize the control over the self-spin state of single molecule. It is the first time in the world that researchers have brought about the chemical reaction inside the single molecule and make use of sectional chemical reaction to change and control the physical characters of the molecule. For such a way can function key physical reactions inside the single molecule, it provides the possibility to invite single molecule functioning instruments and unveils the broad prospective in single molecule research. US Science of 2nd, September has published their paper and made introductions and accommodations on this achievement in the Prospectives column.

The scientists from abroad and home have long been in the hope of freely and delicately manipulating the single molecule, as to realize specific functions. In the 1990s’, the laboratory led by US scientist W. Ho firstly brought out the chemical reaction inside the single molecule with ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy, revealing the large potentials of “single molecule operation”. However, utilizing single molecule’s chemical reaction to realize the special physical qualities is the front-line hard problem which can not be solved.

The editors of Science regard the experiment as an excellent one with precise data, illuminating results and exciting analysis. It is the wonderful example of single molecular functions manipulation.

The new and original point lying in the paper is to put forward the idea that the experimental process can result in partly self-spin state representing the Kondo Effect within single molecule. The success of this experiment exploits a new physical world.

The single molecule bond selective chemistry research in USTC starts in 1994 when Academician Zhu Qingshi came to Hefei for instituting CAS Key Laboratory of Bond Selective Chemistry. From 1996 on, Academician Zhu bases himself upon the front-line of discipline development and organizes the multidiscipline-crossing research team consisting of experimental and theoretical research branch groups separately led by Prof. Hou Jianguo and Prof. Yang Jinlong. And then they launch the single molecule research with the help of ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy. The research team, obtaining the support from National Science Foundation, CAS and Ministry of Science and Technology, goal a series of original and influential research results. Science, Physical Review Letters, Journal of Chemistry and other international-authoritative journals have published several papers of this team. Moreover, their achievements have been awarded 1999 and 2001 China Top 10 News on Fundamental Researches, 2001 China Top 10 Science and Technology Advances, and 2003 Anhui Province Natural Science First Prize.
