The CAS Engineering & Technology Research Center for Thermal Safety (ETRCTS) was established in 1993 and ratified by the CAS in 1998. It is located on the west campus of USTC. Director of the lab is Prof. Fan Weicheng, academician of the CAE. Primary deputy director of the lab is Prof. Yuan Hongyong. The research team is predominantly composed of young and promising researchers and is dedicated to providing users with advanced thermal safety technology, assessment software, engineering projects, education and support services. The lab is now well equipped with modern equipment and technologically supported by the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS). Since 1995, more than 40 research projects have been completed or ongoing, including projects of the National Ninth Five-year Key Project supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the State Commission of Science and Technology, common and key ministerial and provincial projects, and innovation projects supported by the CAS. In 2001, the ETRCTS was given a Second Class National Award for Science and Technology Progress and a 2001 First Class National Award for Education Achievements. The ETRCTS won a Third Class Award for Science and Technology Progress issued by the CAS in 1998 and the 96' Chinese High Advanced Technology & Products Award in 1996. The ETRCTS has 2 affiliated companies: the KDLian Safety Technology Co., Ltd. and the KeYan Chemistry Material Co., Ltd. The affiliated companies focus on nanocomposite fire retardency, pattern-recognition fire detection, water separation & suppression, fire risk assessment and performance-based fire safety design. The ETRCTS offers the following services: expertise in projects for thermal safety engineering, development of some key techniques and methods for thermal safety, consulting services, training in thermal safety assessment & project management and other thermal safety topics.
