| American Information Scientist and Founder of SCI Dr. Garfield Visited USTC |
????At the invitation of USTC president Zhu Qingshi, famous American information scientist, founder of Current Contents, Index Chemicus, SCI, ISTP, ISR, SSCI and AHCI, founder of the Institute of Scientific Information and editor of the journal "Scientists", Dr. Eugene Garfield paid a visit to USTC from Sept. 25th to 27th. ????On the afternoon of Sept. 25th, Dr. Garfield attended the ceremony at USTC for him as an honorary professor of USTC and gladly received the honorary letter of appointment issued by president Zhu Qingshi. After the ceremony, Dr. Garfield made a presentation on "Remarks and Demonstration of HistCite", during which he systematically introduced the principle and function of the information systems he had invented, demonstrated how to use the information systems, and answered the questions raised by the interested participants of the lecture. Dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science of USTC, professor Guo Qingxiang, chaired the academic lecture. ????On the afternoon of Sept. 26th, USTC vice-president Cheng Yi held an informal talk with Dr. Garfield to exchange views on the current state, development trend and prospect of information systems. Relevant department leaders and researchers at USTC were present at the meeting and discussed with Dr. Garfield some topics of common interest. Dr. Garfield explained how to use SCI to make evaluations of the scientific achievements made by scientists and provided many valuable suggestions on the form and content of the academic journal issued by USTC. During his stay at USTC, Dr. Garfield also visited the USTCnet, the School of Chemistry and Materials Science and the west campus. ????As criteria for the evaluation of research achievements in China, SCI and ISTP have great influence in the scientific and technological circles. The annual ranking of influence factors from the ISI in America has long been promoting the international academic journals towards higher standards. His visit to USTC helped us understand his information systems and the usage of information systems in learning scientific development in the world.
