USTC Library was established in 1958. It has made considerable progress with respect to personal, information resources and facilities over 40 years. USTC Library consists of Central Library, East Branch Library and South Branch Library. The library staff number is 100. It basically can meet the demands of teaching and research.

The main building is the sixteen-story Central Library with a total construction area of 16383 square meters. It is equipped with advanced facilities, and offers comprehensive services.

USTC Library consists of the consultative department, acquisition department, system department, cataloging department, reading department, circulation department, journal department, office and other departments. More than 3600 seats are available for faculty members and Students in 25 reading rooms.

The collection of the library contains over 1 million books, 220,000 back issues of these journals and 2500 current journals in Chinese and foreign languages. The quantity and quality of books and journals holdings are characteristic of USTC. They are concentrated on science and technology in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, biology, electronics and so on. Research resources have occupied considerable proportion. Electronic resources are abundant and have covered all research fields at USTC. They can fulfill the need of research sufficiently.

USTC Library lays emphasis on the application of advanced information technology. It has devised 1000 MB/s Fast Ethernet, and the Virtual LAN between its branches. The automatic management of information processing and resources services has been brought into practice.

The multifunctional reading room offers improved resource retrieval services for faculty and students. USTC Library has purchased 6000 full-text electronic Chinese journal data, 2500 full-text electronic foreign journal data and more than 50,000 electronic Chinese books. Readers are able to access DIALOG, STN, OCLC ,Web of Science ,IEEE,AP,Elsevier and so on by on-line search. Readers can on-line retrieve various CD Databases owned by USTC Library such as EI , CA , INSPEC, and IEEE. Additionally it serves readers with multi-media resources.

Thanks to "State's 211 Project" and "Construction of Top-level Universities", USTC Library has become a combination of traditional and digital library. According to the evaluation from a series of factors including collection, electronic devices, electronic resources and services, it ranks high among university libraries of China.
