The campus network of University of Science and Technology of China (USTCnet) was completed and put into operation in late 1994. It was one of the earliest campus networks at that time. Also USTCnet is the Provincial Education and Research Network Center of Anhui.

USTCnet adopts the advanced L3 GigaEthernet as the backbone and Swiching FastEthernet as the access layer. It can provide 1000M bandwidth to major research, teaching, experiment and official buildings and 100M bandwidth to floors and desktops. At present, there are more than 25 kilometers optical-fiber on campus. The new campus network structure consists of three layers: the core layer, the delivery layer and the access layer. It is a large-scale high-speed campus network. For teachers who want to access USTCnet at home, it also provides 150 PSTN lines for dial-up service.

Now more than 5,500 computers are connected to USTCnet and more than 13,000 registered users are using it. There are three uplink channels: 155M link to China Education and Research Net (CERnet), 10M link to China Telecom Net (CHINAnet) and 256K satellite channel link to China Science and Technology Net (CSTnet).

The major services of USTCnet are Internet accessing service, centralized electronic mail service (E-Mail), file and resource sharing service (FTP), searching engines, various web sites, BBS, network living-TV, video on demand service and distance learning service etc.

As the campus network of a high-level university, the bandwith of uplink channel are kept being upgraded. It will be connected to students' dormitory and staff's household. Based on the backbone structure building and information resource development, we will built a modern, practical, efficient, standardized, and secure campus network. USTCnet will become a significant public service infrastructure that performs an important role of operation, management, service, research, teaching and development. USTCnet will be the pioneer and the model of the network in a new age, the important network service and the information resource center of Hefei Science and Research Base.
