As an initiative to promote the cooperation and exchanges between Chinese and Japanese universities, the two governments in 1979 signed an agreement on the promotion of cultural exchanges between the two countries. Based on the document, USTC signed a cooperative agreement with the University of Tokyo in 1982 to launch 15 cooperative projects covering 5 disciplines of physics, chemistry, precision machinery, information technology and management sciences. In 1993, the scale of the cooperation was extended to cover in environmental science and information science over ten well-known universities of the two countries including Tsinghua University, Osaka University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Zhejiang University.
It is acknowledged that the unprecedented cooperation between Chinese and Japanese universities has set up a new mode for further international intercollegiate exchanges.
