From June 20 to 25, 2005 International Conference on Several Complex Variables was held at USTC. As for USTC, it is a second key mathematician-gathering that is after the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) Satellite Conference. The conference is under the aegis of USTC and CAS Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences.

    There are seven universities participating in sponsoring the conference cooperatively. They are Beijing Normal University, He'nan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Capital Normal University, Tong Ji University, Wuhan University and Zhejiang University. USTC Mathematics Department bears the responsibility for specific work during the term of the conference. Honorary chairman of this conference academic committee, professor at Harvard University, Qiu Chengtong and Prof. Xiao Yintang also from Harvard University??as well as the president of academic committee, Prof. S. Baouendi from University of California, San Diego attend the conference. They give the attendance illuminating academic lectures respectively. Prof. Qiu and Prof. Xiao are not only world-renowned Chinese mathematicians in the mathematics field but also academicians of US National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Prof. Qiu is the winner of the Fields Prize, while Prof. Xiao has been invited to deliver one-hour lecture at International Congress of Mathematicians twice. They both are leaders in several complex variables field of the whole world currently. Prof. S. Baouendi, as NAS academician and president of Division of Mathematics in US National Scientific and Technological Committee (NSTC), is also an authority in this scope.
    There are overseas elites in several complex variables field, who represent their countries (including America, Russia, France, Japan, Korean, Czechoslovakia), attending the conference. Almost all the mathematics elites form China's four places of two sides (mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao) take part in the conference as well. Nearly 50 scholars from the whole world lecture on achievements they obtained in their own research fields and potentiality of several complex variables developing. USTC holding such top-level mathematics conference demonstrates that International Several Complex Variables World appreciates the research achievements got by USTC Mathematics Department led by Prof. Gong Sheng.
