????New Year's greetings!
????How time flies! A few more days will take us into another brand-new year. On the occasion of bidding farewell to the old and welcoming in the new, we would like to extend to all the alumni at home and abroad the warmest regards and best wishes on behalf of the entire staff and the student body.
????To begin with, please allow us to present an overview of the school's current construction and development.
????2001, the first year of the new century carries an unusual significance to USTC. On the one hand, the school has made endeavors to materialize the joint construction agreement reached between CAS, the Education Ministry and Anhui Province and to promote, in a comprehensive manner, the construction of a high-level research-oriented institution; while on the other hand, by taking advantage of the transition of the CAS' Knowledge-renovating Project from the initial stage to the overall development, the school has taken an active part in all aspects of the pilot Knowledge-renovating Project and has won noticeable achievements in various constructions and undertakings. In May this year, a group of experts organized by CAS and the Ministry of Education made an evaluation of USTC's construction items in the "211 Project" and during the "Ninth-5-year Plan" and highly praised the achievements. The held that USTC's "211 Project" construction during the "Ninth-5-year Plan" period was outstanding, had successfully fulfilled various projects, satisfactorily realized the planned goals, scored a number of landmark renovative academic achievements of the world's advanced level, with both national and international significance and had consequently met the conditions and standards set by the state for accreditation. In April this year, consecutive conferences were convened by Anhui Province Party Committee and Anhui Provincial Government, which focused on the campus layout and construction as well as the improvement of the surrounding environment. Substantial progress has been made in this regard. Smooth progress and prideful achievements have also been witnessed in the set-up of the academic system of a research-oriented university in the construction of key disciplines, with equal emphasis laid on both teaching and research, in exploitation of human resources, in scientific research and hi-tech enterprises, in public services and in infrastructure.
????A consensus has been reached from top to bottom that to build up a world-famous research-oriented university depends on distinguished talents, esp. the kind endowed with generalship as well as numbers of young promising faculty members. Therefore, beginning with the management scheme and employment system, the school has formulated a series of important measures to vigorously introduce, train and stabilize various distinguished talents, which greatly reinforce the corps of teachers and lead to the initial establishment of an employment mechanism characterized by its creativity, flexibility and adaptability to the market. In the days to come, the school will continue to promote reforms in human resources management and distribution system, to practice employment through competition and post subsidies, with preference for outstanding teachers and researchers, and will create an open, favorable environment for employment and intensify efforts to introduce and train high-level, high-quality people with a creative mind by means of the Education Ministry's "Cheung Kong Scholars Program", CAS' "Hundred Talents Program", in addition to USTC's "Hundred Talents Program" and the "Master's Chair".
????This year, in particular, USTC and Suzhou Municipal Government joined hands in setting up a USTC Graduate School financed by Suzhou Municipal Government, which provides favorable living and working conditions and handsome salaries for tutors and management personnel selected from home and abroad. As a result, the alumni may come back to work for their alma mater in the economically advanced area of Changjiang River Delta, or , if they prefer, can run joint ventures with USTC in her Pudong Research and Development Center Stationed in Shanghai. It is our earnest hope that an increasing number of graduates will return to work for their alma mater and contribute their intelligence and gift to building USTC into a world-renown, research-oriented institution in the 21st century.
????USTC's alumni boast a fine tradition of patriotism and love of their alma mater. They have constantly concerned themselves with and enthusiastically supported the construction and development of the school, whether at home or abroad, in favorable conditions or in adverse circumstances. Over the recent years, there have been many groups of USTC's alumni to come back either for a visit or for investigation. This is a vivid demonstration that they are concerned about the country and affectionately tied to the school. All these constitute, as always, the assets, which perpetually push the school to new heights, an important powerhouse for our incessant strivings, a component part of USTC's morale, and a merit that touches the hearts of us all. We would like to avail ourselves of this opportunity to extend our heart-felt thanks to all the alumni who have shown care and support for their alma mater.
????Intimately linked with the alumni heart and soul, the alma mater also pays close attention to their study and work and feel, proud of their achievements. The school's construction and development is inseparable from their participation, care and support. In the past more than 40 years, USTC has wrested eye-catching brilliant successes through pains-taking work, and in them is found the sweat and wisdom of her alumni. We have the confidence, and we have the capability too, to boost the reputation of the school in the new century. We sincerely hope to continue to enjoy the care and support of the alumni. We earnestly look forward to working, to trail blazing and to advancing hand in hand with the alumni on the campus of the alma mater. Let all those who once studied or worked, and those who are working or studying at USTC be united to make every effort to build USTC into a world-famous research-oriented university and to eventually realize the magnificent goal of "contract a first-class university and train the first-class talent".
