The Archives of the University of Science & Technology of China The archives of the University of Science & Technology of China was founded in November 1992. In February 1995, it was promoted to a second level national scientific archives management unit and was honored as a National advanced archives work unit. In June 1998, it was honored as a CAS advanced archives work unit.

The curator of the archives is Professor Ding Yixing. The archives consists of a business instruction section, a management and service section and a computer center. There are 16 employees, 5 of whom possess senior professional titles, and 7 others have secondary titles. The archives is a building with a total area of 1400 m2 and a usable area of 1040 m2, equipped with computers, duplicating machines, dehumidifier, air-conditioners, scanners and disk duplicators.

The archives manages the archives of whole university since 1958. The archived material is up to 50,000 volumes by now and the bookshelves would be about one thousand meters long when arranged in a row. The rare pieces of the archives include those during the founding period of the university and the manuscripts of Guo Moruo and other leaders of the university as well as the scientists, the files of the Secretariat of the Central Party Committee authorizing the founding of this university, the reports of CAS about several issues of the USTC approved by the Central Party Committee, the approval by the State Council to emphasize the construction of key universities including USTC, the documents on setting up the Gifted Young class authorized by CAS. Other archives include the documents on the appointment and removal of all the successive presidents and branch secretaries of the Party committee issued by the Central Party Committee and the State Council, "the investigation of extraordinary education" which was awarded for the national-level outstanding educational achievements, student records, record of thesis papers of the PHD and Mater students after 1978, the teaching archives of overseas graduates and undergraduates, more than 300 items on research achievements which won national, provincial or ministerial awards, more than 200 volumes of research papers and over 1,500 volumes of archives different figures. There are visual archives including photos of the country leaders visiting the university, among whom were Chen Yi, Nie Rongzhen, Tan Zhenlin, Luo Reiqin, Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Li Reihuan, Hu Jintao, Li Lanqing, Fang Yi, Zhang Jinfu, etc., and those of famous scientists visiting or teaching in the university, including Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao, Ding Zhaozhong, Li Yuanzhe, Wu Jianxiong, Yuan Jialiu, Chen Xingshen, Ren Zhigong, Yan Jici, Qian Xuesen, Hua Luogeng, etc. The archives also contain inscriptions of Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Qiao Shi, Nie Rongzhen, Fang Yi, Zhang Jinfu and Yan Jici, and office appliances, which were used by Guo Moruo when he was the president of the university.

In the year 2000, the archives established a memorial hall of the university history, managed to reinstall the first accelerator in China and held an exhibition to introduce to the students the academicians of the university. Photos, manuscripts and the artifacts of Yan Jici and Qian Lingzhao are also exhibited. In September, 2000, the archives conducted "the memorial of Professor Zhao Zhongxiao" in which Yang Zhengnin, Li Zhengdao,Ting Zhaozhong inscribe the name of the memorial and offered an epigraph. In 1999, the archives started a board on BBS of USTC and established the online archive information system to publicize the activities of the archives. In the future, the archives will finish the local web, install the archives information management software, establish database of all types of archives, and release the WebPages to gradually modernize the archives management.

For convenience, the archives group has designed many kinds of index methods, offering such services as telephone and mail search and archives deposit. In the research aspect, the archives has compiled and published the USTC 40-year memorabilia, USTC historical sketch and USTC anecdote.
